As an expert in trauma-informed practice, Dr. Julie Lopez has over 30 years of clinical experience working with trauma and PTSD, including work with compulsive behaviors.
Dr. Lopez has been qualified as a trauma expert by both legal courts and the media. Her extensive knowledge and training come from early specialization and immersion in trauma settings.
Dr. Lopez’s book Live Empowered! was endorsed by Gabor Mate as “an accessible guide” to understanding the power of work with implicit memory. Her work has been featured in the media and on numerous podcasts, blogs, and more, including The Associated Press, Adoptees On, Author Hour, Yes, and… and more.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Dr. Lopez worked clinically for 30 years, developing her trauma expertise. In the early years of her clinical career, she worked with countless survivors of sexual violence as the coordinator for specialized clinical services at the DC Rape Crisis Center. She has also worked with individuals who have experienced many other traumas, including natural and human-made disasters, physical violence, interpersonal violence, family relinquishments, and neglect.

Dr. Lopez was an adjunct faculty member at The Catholic University of America’s graduate social work program for 10 years. In her social work career, she has worked with Northern Virginia Family Service, the Hospital for Sick Children, the DC Rape Crisis Center, and Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services. In 2002, she was distinguished for her work in establishing a social services program for low-income Spanish-speaking immigrants, receiving the Social Worker of the Year award from the Metropolitan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP & NONPROFIT INVOLVEMENT
Dr. Lopez founded the nonprofit Entrepreneurly to support gifted entrepreneurs in scaling and growing their businesses in a healthy way. She volunteers her time overseeing strategy and serving on boards for various organizations, including Viva Partnership LLC, Dr. Julie Lopez LLC, Entrepreneurly, and the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), where she previously served as Learning Chair and currently serves as Member Engagement Chair.
She also volunteers her time with community organizations, including the Sonrise Project (providing resources and support to BIPOC families of struggling teens), Birdseed (helping disrupt barriers to homeownership for marginalized communities), and the Barker Adoption Foundation (providing community support and education).
EDUCATION
Julie received her Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech and her Master’s and PhD in clinical social work from the Catholic University of America.
