Using the Sacral Chakra to Engage with your Sexuality

Home » Empower Your Journey With The Viva Blog » Using the Sacral Chakra to Engage with your Sexuality

According to ancient Hindu, Jainist, and Buddhist healing practices, Chakras are the energy centers of the body. There are seven centers, each of which relates to a specific energy category and affects the flow of our spiritual life.

Many clinicians find Chakra work to be helpful because of how it connects our physical and psychological experiences.

What is the Sacral Chakra?

If you explore Chakra work, you will most likely learn about the Sacral Chakra. The Sacral Chakra is located just above the pubic bone and is responsible for passion, sexuality, intimacy, money, creativity, and joy. The balance of the Sacral Chakra allows us to improve our relationships with ourselves and others.

Tim Rogers, LMT, believes that the Sacral Chakra is particularly important to focus on due to our filtered culture.  “Our culture has distorted the energy of the Second Chakra by bombarding us with images of what ‘sexy’ should look like and be like. Pornography sometimes replaces the need for true connection and intimacy. And there is no limit to the ways trauma can shut down the Second Chakra. It’s a tragedy how trauma has taken the very personal and powerful energy of this chakra away from so many.”

How can you tell if your Second Chakra is out of balance?

Practitioners like Tim identify the following as issues with the Sacral Chakra: lower back pain, lower gastrointestinal problems, decreased libido, isolative behavior, lack of creativity and passion, and addictive behaviors that numb and dissociate.

How to balance your sacral chakra

The Sacral Chakra awakens the sensual self. Therefore, Tim revealed, you can improve the balance of this Chakra by indulging in sensual pleasures—and that doesn’t just mean sexual ones. Simple ways to boost the Sacral Chakra include eating a decadent meal, luxuriating in a hot bath, and enjoying a massage. Physically, the goddess pose, pelvic rock, and hip circles can enliven the Second Chakra. Dancing is also effective in waking up the Second Chakra, and it’s enjoyable to boot! And let’s not forget the social aspect of this Chakra—reaching out to community and loved ones can provide needed balance.

How does the Sacral Chakra relate to color?

The color orange is associated with this Chakra. Consuming orange foods, looking at orange objects, or even wearing orange can strengthen this energy center. Tim has received client feedback confirming this effect.

Why should we strengthen the Sacral Chakra?

In Tim’s own words, “The Second Chakra can embrace all those things that make the sensual world wonderful and meaningful. We are living in bodies for only so long, so why not claim them and enjoy them as much as possible?”

What if I Don’t Connect with Chakra Work?

Many people appreciate how Chakra work focuses on mind-body wellness, but don’t feel connected to Chakra work in particular. This is normal!

If you’re looking for therapies that hone in on your bodily sensations and how they are connected to your mental health, we highly recommend body-based therapies like trauma-sensitive Yoga and Somatic Experiencing.
